Green Living Day, this June 17th , 2017, the Farmer’s Market celebrated sustainability. Aside from the usual tents, we saw the additions of many tents focused on the earth and living green.
These tents included Dirty Boys Composting, a business that helps, informs, and aids people with and about composting, a tent from the Ashland Community Garden, in which kids were able to plant vegetable seeds and take them home, a tent from the Ashland Citizens Action Committee which informed citizens about the dangers of the Nyanza, a tent from the Ashland Sustainability Committee that promoted their effort in banning plastic bags in town, and one last tent from the Upper Charles River Trail Committee in which people were able to offer opinions on the new Ashland bike and hiking trail. The Ashland Police Department handed out bicycle helmets courtesy of the law firm of Breakstone, White & Gluck’s 2017 Project KidSafe campaign. There was even an also the appearance of a Nissan Leaf electric car!
The market aims to be green other days of the season as well. In addition to composting, all vendors use recyclable containers and no plastic bags are permitted. New this year, the the music system is powered by a solar panel. The green market was accompanied by Whiskey In The Jar as our performer, and for artisans there was the appearance of Giulietta The Muse, Social Catalysts Charitable Foundation and The Domesticated Wild Child. Giulietta the Muse offered many beautiful paintings, Social Catalysts Charitable Foundation showed many tote bags and clutches made from recycled VHS tapes and made by employees with disabilities. The Domesticated Wild Child provided the market with many herbal and organic products and remedies.
